Happy Labor Day everyone! It’s the ‘official’ kick off to campaign season - buckle up & get ready for knocks at your door, cards on your doorknobs & lots of ads!

Thought I’d share a bit with you about the Monmouth City Council today, for those who may not know.

Our Council is comprised of a Mayor & 6 Councilors - all elected by YOU - & all volunteers.

They meet on the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of each month, 6:30 pm, City Hall. The public is welcome to come and, currently, are given 3 minutes (to the second) to speak.

The Council is currently made up of very like-minded people, including the Mayor - with the exception of one person.

I’ve attended several meetings - the votes, ‘at best’, are 5-1. The Mayor votes when there’s a tie. Once in a blue moon, it looks like it may be 4-2, but the person on the fence for a split second hops right back with the group think.

How does that sound to you? A bit lop-sided? A pack that votes in unison is unhealthy - regardless of their points of view.

Where’s the debate? Where are the different ideas, thoughts? With one person. God bless him.

The Mayor & City Manager supposedly collaborate on each meeting’s agenda - the items to be discussed. I’ll let you wonder whether there are any items brought forward from the public - issues that residents may have suggested - here’s a hint - no.

Should this be how YOUR city government works? I don’t think so.

We are supposed to have representative government - do you feel represented? Is your voice listened to? Are you asked about anything?

If the answer to those questions is ‘no’, then I urge you to look for new options.

Thankfully, you have several this year!

A new Mayoral candidate (me 😊) who is a people-person and genuinely cares about this town, will be visible & out & about with YOU, asking questions, listening. I’ll be respectful when you do speak, and expect the same from the Council.

There are 3 solid, people-first Council candidates running against 2 incumbents & an empty seat.

Don’t just go with the current flow.

Each vote matters in a small-town election. Please tune in, listen, read the materials - and VOTE. Our future really does depend on decisions we make now.
